The Castle Hotel

October 2011
From strength to strength for The Castle, up for best pub at MFDF awards tonight. Good luck. The £3 a pint thing has become absolutely the norm in this part of towm and more in other places. Any negatives? - not really, but nearly always full so you've got to be up for that.

Seemingly the hot spot in town - justifying the £3/pint for bitter - some balk at this, but it's a nice place to be - and that's what being in nice places costs. Food in the afternoons is good too - stew and dumplings at £6 is very good and there's been a 2 for 1 offer since Christmas. Roast beef and horseradish sandwiches & soups have all been good. The Castle deserves all it's success.

October 2010 - Extensive refurb finally finished, very sympathetic and looks really good. Cracking job all round.  We really wish the Castle well. Great to have an old boozer looking the part again.

....There are always those who reject change - one regular thought it was fantastic looking but found 'too much style intimidating'. Perhaps the new look will change the clientele to an extent. We'll have to see.

2009
After a brief closure this attractive, old pub reopened, under new management, in April 2009. At lunchtime it is relatively quiet, like most pubs on Oldham Street, but a friendly welcome in the cosy front bar and a good array of well kept Robinson’s beer make it a good venue - although £2.80 a pint for standard Robbies bitter is perhaps on the high side. The extensive and ongoing plans for renovation of the rest of the building will hopefully have little impact on the old-fashioned boozer feel - which is aided by only having basic bar-type food on offer. Though a few changing guest ales would improve the interest for regularly visiting ale fans. Evenings are a whole different proposition with the place becomming extremely popular with a younger crowd, often on the way to gigs and the like.

  1. Don't forget this is birthplace of the mighty Manchester Egg. Manchester's legendary breakthrough in pub snack innovation. Get yourself down for one and update this post with your thoughts. Great blog BTW! You're been bloody everywhere!
